Our Esterification Process

RPS developed the only continuous Esterification System for the Biodiesel Industry that could handle feedstocks up to 20% FFA (free fatty acid content). Our system is capable of reducing the FFA from 20% to less than 2% by weight in a single stage reaction.

 

Our continuous reactor is designed to handle low pH esterified mixture that contain acid, solvent and feedstock. Our proprietary reactor design was developed after years of experience deploying these units in the Biodiesel Industry.

 

Post esterification reaction, the mixture is washed in an LLE column (Liquid-Liquid Extraction) to recover excess solvent and neutralize the acid. The washed feedstock is sent to a forced recirculation dryer to remove residual moisture to less than 1000 PPM. At this stage the feedstock has less than 1.5% FFA and ready for Tranesterification Reaction step.

 

The Feedstock produced through our Esterification System does not require a prior feedstock filtration system for degumming or de-waxing. Our process washes of phospholipids, impurity matter and de-wax the feedstock in the esterification step. Our Esterification System allows drastic reduction is feedstock pre-treatment cost and can handle feedstocks such as corn oil from ethanol plants, used cooking oil, yellow grease, un-purified rendered fat.

 

The washed solvent stream from the LLE Column is distilled through our Methanol Distillation column that is integrated into the Esterification System to produce less than 1000 PPM moisture pure methanol.
